Profile

Simon Cameron is Counsel at Weintraub Huang LLP, where he maintains a broad commercial litigation practice including contract and shareholder disputes, securities litigation and regulatory proceedings, and construction, franchise, and environmental litigation. Simon has represented clients at all levels of court in Ontario, including the Court of Appeal, and at the Supreme Court of Canada. Simon has also represented clients in arbitrations and regulatory tribunal proceedings. Prior to joining Weintraub Huang LLP, Simon was an associate at two leading national law firms.

Simon received his Juris Doctor with Honours from the University of Toronto, where he received the Edward J. Kowal ’65 Prize for overall achievement in commercial law courses, as well as course prizes for top standing in Administrative Law, Business Organizations, Bankruptcy and Insolvency, and Advanced Business Law.

Simon was a member of the University of Toronto Moot Court Committee and won best team and best factum prizes at the Corporate and Securities Law Moot. As an undergraduate, Simon won the North American Debating Championships.

Simon was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2018 and is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Advocates’ Society. In 2022, Simon was named to the Pro Bono Ontario Honour Roll.

Simon has been recognized by Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch for Corporate and Commercial Litigation and Mergers & Acquisitions Law.

  • Keatley Surveying Ltd v Teranet Inc, 2019 SCC 43: Counsel to successful respondent in the first Supreme Court of Canada case to consider the application of Crown copyright pursuant to s. 12 of the Copyright Act.
  • Bent v Platnick, 2020 SCC 23 and 1704604 Ontario Ltd v Pointes Protection Association, 2020 SCC 22: Counsel to interveners in the first Supreme Court of Canada cases to consider Ontario’s anti-SLAPP legislation.
  • R v Yasotharan, 2019 ONCA 568: Counsel to appellant, successfully reversing guilty plea by appellant suffering from permanent intellectual development disorder.
  • Stronach v Stronach et al: Counsel to officer and trustee in litigation over control of Stronach family enterprises and trusts.
  • Ontario (Attorney General) v Restoule: Trial counsel to Ontario government in six-month trial addressing claims that the Ontario and Canadian governments owned beneficiaries of Robinson treaties.
  • Maple Leaf Foods ats Bird et al: Counsel in claim / defence of construction lien by owner of major food production facility against general contractor and mechanical subcontractor.
  • TD Bank, NA v Lloyd’s Underwriters: Counsel in $300 million insurance claim by TD to recover payments made following the discovery of the Rothstein fraud in Florida.
  • CannTrust Holdings Inc: Counsel for CannTrust holdings in internal investigation, class action defence, and CCAA proceedings.
  • Fehr v Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada: Counsel for defendant in long-running class action alleging breach of insurance policies.
  • Price v H Lundbeck A/S: Counsel for defendant in class proceeding alleging that pharmaceutical product caused birth defects.
